frente {\'e} visualizado.
(modula{\c{c}}{\~a}o hidrodin{\^a}mica e instabilidade
atmosf{\'e}rica), do sistema sensor (polariza{\c{c}}{\~a}o e
frequ{\^e}ncia) e do imageamento (dire{\c{c}}{\~a}o do vento em
rela{\c{c}}{\~a}o ao feixe do radar e {\^a}ngulo de
incid{\^e}ncia) sobre a modula{\c{c}}{\~a}o do sigma zero nessa
regi{\~a}o frontal. Foram realizadas simula{\c{c}}{\~o}es
num{\'e}ricas utilizando o modelo M4S (Romeiser et al., {{1997;}}
micro-ondas SAR da superf{\'{\i}}cie do oceano.
polariza{\c{c}}{\~o}es vertical (ASAR/ENVISAT) e horizontal
(RADARSAT-1), retratando a frente de superf{\'{\i}}cie da CB. A
diverg{\^e}ncia da ordem de {{\$10^{-4}\$}} {{\$s^{-1}\$,}}
Comparando
dire{\c{c}}{\~a}o de imageamento {{\emph{downwind},}}
banda L, polariza{\c{c}}{\~a}o horizontal e dire{\c{c}}{\~a}o
ABSTRACT:
ABSTRACT Earlier publications have shown that Synthetic Aperture
Radar (SAR) Images used in combination with thermal imaging may
yield a proper location of the Brazil Current (BC) front, allowing
studies under high cloudiness conditions. Nonetheless, some SAR
images show no surface signature of the BC front. In this work,
the mechanisms influencing the thermal front signature in SAR
images were studied, in order to understand the relative roles of
environmental (Hydrodynamic modulation and atmospheric
instabilities), sensor (polarization and frequency) and imaging
(wind direction in relation to radars incidence angle) parameters
over the modulation of the Normalized Radar Cross Section (NRCS)
signatures at the BC front. Simulations were conducted with the
M4S (Romeiser et al., {{1997;}} Romeiser and Alpers, 1997), a
numerical model that simulates microwave SAR imaging at the ocean
surface. Four SAR images of the Brazilian Southeastern Coast
depicting the BC thermal front were selected including VV
polarization ASAR/ENVISAT and {{}} HH polarization RADARSAT-1
images. Conditions of current shear and divergence were reproduced
for the imaged fronts, using in situ current velocities obtained
from both Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) and a
hydrodynamic ocean numerical model. Wind velocity fields were
simulated based on QuickScat data for each imaging date. Results
showed a good agreement between the simulated responses and SAR
image responses, under divergence values of the order of
{{\$10^{-4}\$}} {{\$s^{-1}\$,}} along with a decrease in the
relaxation rate, which indicates that, for some specific cases,
local increases in shear and divergence may allow the detection of
the BC thermal front. A comparison between C and L band
simulations shows that: a) the highest NRCS modulations at the
front were reproduced at the C band, considering a
cross-polarization and a downwind imaging angle, and assuming the
effects of both hydrodynamic and atmospheric {{modulations;}} b)
when considering the hydrodynamic modulation alone, the highest
NRCS modulations were reproduced for L band, assuming HH
polarization and an upwind imaging angle. Results also show that
the M4S simulation accuracies can be degraded for high incidence
angles.",
